A Different Kind of Rich: Healing and the Life I Built

January is ending quietly.

I’m having breakfast, lost in deep thoughts, the kind that don’t ask to be solved. They just want to be witnessed. This month didn’t feel like a beginning or an ending. It felt like a pause. A long breath after years of holding everything in.

And maybe that’s why this question hit me harder than I expected:

“Why don’t you have savings?”

A Different Kind of Rich

It was asked casually. No malice. No judgment in the tone. But still, something cracked open inside me. Because some questions don’t land in the present. They travel back in time. They knock on doors you worked so hard to close. They touch wounds that look healed but still remember.

Especially when the question comes from someone dear to you.

Especially when that person doesn’t know the full story.

The parts of my life they didn’t see

What many people see now is the result. Not the process.

They see that I live in Germany.

They see that I travel.

They see that I have a blog.

They see that I’m not drowning in debt.

They see that I somehow “made it.”

What they don’t see are the seven years it took just to arrive here. Emotionally. Mentally. Spiritually.

I didn’t start from scratch.

I started from negative.

From depression so heavy it felt like moving underwater.

From survival mode where every decision was about staying afloat.

From cleaning and odd jobs not because I dreamed of them, but because I needed to eat, to live, to keep going.

From learning German with no shortcuts, no safety net, no one doing it for me.

I came from a place where ambition wasn’t romantic. It was necessary. Where healing wasn’t trendy. It was life-saving.

There were years where my only goal was to make it to the next day.

And somehow, quietly, without applause, I did.

Healing before saving

People talk about savings as if it’s the ultimate proof of responsibility. And yes-savings matter. I understand that. I respect it.

But before I could save money, I had to save myself.

I spent years unlearning a mindset that told me I had to endure everything silently. A mindset shaped by poverty, by responsibility too early, by the belief that rest was earned only through exhaustion.

Books helped me survive when nothing else could.

Writing helped me breathe when I felt like I was disappearing.

Healing taught me that success isn’t just about accumulation. Sometimes it’s about liberation.

I invested in facing my own ghosts, getting to know myself, growth, awareness, healing and change.

I invested in becoming someone who could finally imagine a future.

Those investments don’t show up in bank accounts but they changed my life. They saved my life.

Travel wasn’t luxury . It was expansion. A desperate act to find beauty when where I am couldn’t offer me much.

Another unspoken judgment hides behind the savings question:

“But you’ve traveled so much.”

Yes. I have.

And every country I stepped into felt like reclaiming a part of myself that poverty tried to shrink.

I come from a place where the world feels impossibly far away. Traveling wasn’t about collecting destinations. It was about proving to myself that my life wasn’t meant to stay small.

Travel taught me resilience.

Gave me perspective.

Humility.

Freedom.

It reminded me that I was more than my circumstances.

And no. Those experiences didn’t make me rich in the traditional sense.

They made me alive.

The life I imagined for myself

I imagined a life that didn’t trap me in survival mode forever.

A life where work could travel with me.

Where income didn’t depend on staying in one place out of fear.

Where I could live in different countries for a while and move again when I felt ready.

Where creativity and writing weren’t hobbies, but lifelines.

That’s why I work hard to earn money online.

That’s why I built my blog from nothing.

That’s why I keep choosing paths that look unconventional to others.

I may not have savings the way people expect but I’m not broke.

I’m not in debt.

And I’ve reached milestones I once only whispered to myself in quiet moments of hope.

Ausbildung, mindset and becoming someone new

When I was accepted into Ausbildung, it wasn’t just luck.

It was years of discipline, self-study and mindset work done in a language that wasn’t mine, in a country that didn’t owe me anything.

I didn’t inherit opportunities.

I built them. Of course with help from people who saw me. My struggles. The tears I silently cried.

I changed my mindset not by rejecting where I came from, but by expanding it. By reading, learning, applying, failing and trying again. By allowing myself to believe that I deserved more than just survival.

That alone cost everything I had. Energy. Time. Tears.

And I would do it again.

Planting roots after feeling homeless

For a long time, I felt homeless not in the literal sense, but in my body, in my identity, in my life.

Healing gave me something I never had before:

the ability to stay.

I’m ready to plant my roots in Germany now. Not out of fear, but out of choice. Not because I’m stuck, but because I’m finally grounded enough to stay.

That’s a kind of wealth no one talks about.

When the question hurts more because it comes from love

The question about savings hit differently because it came from someone who matters to me.

Someone who doesn’t know a huge part of my story.

And suddenly, I felt the urge to explain even though I promised myself I wouldn’t anymore.

I tried to speak through tears.

My sentences broke.

I paused. Sobbed. Continued.

Not because I owed an explanation but because love sometimes makes you want to be seen.

I’ve learned not to explain myself to the world.

That’s what my blog is for.

That’s what my journal is for- for even wilder, messier thoughts.

But when it’s someone you care about, the silence feels heavier.

Tears as nourishment

I’ve had tears for breakfast.

For lunch.

For dinner.

As snacks.

As lullabies that rocked me to sleep night after night.

I’m tired of crying and yet, every good cry feels like release. Like proof that I’m still connected to myself. That I haven’t gone numb.

Crying carried me through when logic couldn’t.

A different kind of rich

I don’t have savings like people my age

But I have:

freedom of mind

emotional intelligence

lived wisdom

a voice

a story

a future I consciously chose

I am not broke.

I am not behind.

I am not irresponsible.

I am simply rich in a different way.

And maybe that’s enough.

For now.

For me.
